Commons:Requests for comment/Categorization of SVG files

From Wikimedia Commons, the free media repository

Background

[edit]

Currently commons separates SVG images from other images, see for example Category:SVG flags and Category:Flags. It was proposed elsewhere to change this.

Arguments for moving SVG files into respective main topic categories:

  • make files easier to find
  • avoid maintaining 2 or more parallel cat structures
  • whether a file is SVG or not is sufficiently well visible on the extension

Catches:

  • categories for language-neutral SVG:s and multilanguage SVG:s should remain, since it is NOT visibile on the extension or anywhere whether a SVG file maybe is language-neutral or multilanguage or not
  • there are other non-subject features possibly worth categorization (videos without sound, animated GIF:s PNG:s WEBP:s, ...)

Questions:

  • Should the categories for SVG such as Category:SVG flags only get hidden, or completely deleted?

Darn. While you drafted this RfC, I drafted a CfD: Commons:Categories for discussion/2025/02/Category:SVG by subject. --Enyavar (talk) 01:29, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Taylor 49 and Enyavar: Copying my comment from the CFD, I don't have much issues with deleting SVG categories beyond "Level 2". But the main problem I see is the potential overcrowding of categories like Category:SVG maps of India, for which I suggest to add the {{CategoryTOC}} template. I've also crafted a template at User:Sbb1413/sandbox for automatic categorization of SVG files into appropriate categories. Sbb1413 (he) (talkcontribsuploads) 11:15, 13 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
