Competition Rules
You can upload any bird photo from the Bengal region, if you have bird photos taken in the past, you can also upload them (read the Frequently Asked Questions). To participate in this competition, you need to follow a few rules. These are:
- You must upload your own photographs;
- Photos must be uploaded between 1 - 31 March 2025;
- By uploading, you agree to release the photo under the CC BY-SA 4.0 license, allowing reuse.
- Photos must not contain any watermarks.
Next to that, there are a few practical rules:
- Your Wiki account must have an active email address linked to it (you can add one here);
- If a photo is deleted from Wikimedia Commons for any reason, it will automatically be disqualified from the competition;
- When uploading a photo, you must include the full details of the bird and the location in the description box. Otherwise, the photo may be disqualified from winning a prize.
Judging Criteria
Our jury will select the winners based on the following criteria:
- Research on the topic - whether the process of taking pictures and interpretation is included;
- Description quality (mainly judged based on the uploader's information);
- Usability and relevance of the Wikimedia project;
- Uniqueness and availability of the image - whether it is rare;
- Technical quality (accuracy, use of light, perspective, composition, etc.);
The reasons for rejection can be considered as follows:
- Confirmed or suspected copyright violations;
- If needed, participants may be contacted via talk pages or email. If there is no response within 48 hours, the related photo may be considered suspicious and rejected. Participants should ensure their email is enabled (active), check the talk page, and check the spam folder.
- Lack of complete Exif data—Where possible, contributors should include details of other versions or different angles of the image (or provide a link to a version with EXIF data).
- Excessive processing, such as using filters that result in unrealistic edits, may lead to disqualification.
- Presence of watermarks or unnecessary attribution on the image (photographer credit is ensured through licensing and can also be included in EXIF data).
How to Participate
- Step 1: Don’t have a Wikimedia Commons account yet? Create one here – it only takes a few seconds! Don’t forget to verify your email address.
- Step 2: Upload your photos by clicking here.
- Step 3: When uploading, it’s best to format the photo title like this: Name of Bird (species) - Location. Example:
Chestnut-tailed Starling (Sturnia malabarica), Satchari National Park.jpg
orLittle Egret (Egretta garzetta), Sundarbans East Wildlife Sanctuary, Bangladesh.jpg
).
- Step 4: In the description section, write the bird’s name. Then, publish the upload. You can upload as many photos as you like! (If possible, add a short description of the photo, such as where, when, and how it was taken, and any special details about the bird. You may also include descriptions in English, Bangla or other languages.)
- Step 5: You can also have a look at last year's Winning Photos to get an idea of the photos in this competition.
Out of Scope
We discourage uploading the following files related to:
- Exact duplicate images that already exist on Wikimedia Commons (re-uploading is not allowed).
- Non-photographic works, such as drawings or fully computer-generated images.
- Blurry, grainy, or very low-resolution images where the bird’s features are not visible.
- Photos showing only feathers or body parts instead of a complete bird.
- Images of caged, hand-held, or domesticated birds (e.g., pigeons, chickens, pet parrots), as this contest focuses on photographing birds in their natural habitat.
- Images with incorrect or incomplete identification, such as wrong scientific names or misleading information.
Make sure your uploaded photos follow the competition guidelines!😊
